Description

Research has established that the class of Decadrachm to which this coin belongs was the first issued shortly after the Syracusian Victory. The Chariot on the reverse symbolizes the races which were run at the Festival of the Assinarians. The obverse shows the head of Arethusa whose fountain of sweet water still rises on the north side of the Island of Ortygla. The dolphin’s symbolize the sea around the Island.
